Plitvice Lakes fom Split

You've probably heard about the Plitvice Lakes National Park (colloquially just 'Plitvice') which is why you're here now, reading this.
If you haven't, don't worry, as you're about to discover a natural phenomenon of indescribable beauty...
Did you know that in the span of just a single day, 1 billion dollars worth of water flows from Croatia into the Adriatic Sea? That's $1.000.000.000,00! And the most bountiful part of Croatia (as far as water is concerned) is the region of Lika, which houses the Plitvice Lakes National Park. It's as if this entire hidden world of Croatia's underground reservoirs and streams converges at Plitvice, wanting to show Man all the wonder, natural beauty, and wealth it has to offer.
The national park was founded in 1949, and is situated in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia. The fresh air is constantly cooled by a crisscrossing network of flowing streams, some as shallow as a coin and others so deep they empty into underground caverns many hundreds of meters into the Earth's lightless, subterranean depths.
The lakes on the upper terraces are separate from each other, delineated by dolomite boundaries, which, due to the accumulation of tuff, grow both vertically and horizontally, forming barriers in the process, thereby altering the appearance of the lakes over the decades. Tuff accumulates mainly in locations where water falls from a certain height, or by the encrustation of algae and moss by calcium carbonate. The lower lakes were created through the collapse of natural load-bearing arches over their underground caverns, through which water from the upper lakes passes before draining away.
Regardless of their formation, all the lakes share a similar property - they are renowned for their distinctive colors, ranging from azure to green, grey to blue. The colors change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals and organisms in the water, and the angle of incoming sunlight. It is a spectacular sight to behold, and leaves few indifferent.
Booking a tour at Plitvice Lakes means you'll get to experience a place of surreal, almost magical beauty - an unsullied natural oasis where the trees, air, and water are so clean they're home to many indigenous species not found anywhere else. Wolf, bear, lynx, doe, otter, and many other types of animal all seek refreshment and nourishment from the lakes' water, and ancient, centuries-old trees preside over the area like regal guardians, their silence a testament to the passing of the ages. King of them all, however, is a 700-year-old fir nestled within the primeval greenery of the national park.
The tour proceeds by minivan, and is limited to a relatively small group of guests.
Short pauses for rest are factored in the trip toward the lakes themselves.
With more than a million annual visitors, the Plitvice National Park is something you can't afford to miss!
