Hvar vineyard and wine tours

Naturally, Hvar being called the island of sun with over 2700 sunny hours per year is a perfect place for producing wine. Ancient Greeks brought vine to the island of Hvar in 4th B.C. and planted the first one somewhere in the large Stari Grad Plain which has remained partially covered by vineyards till present days. Just one look at this fields is enough to spot the special greek system of geometrical land division that hasn't been changed for over 24 centuries. The story of this excursion is formed around churches on Hvar Island because every single church on the island is overlooked by a vineyard. Each vineyard church here has a characteristic form and the same can be said for the vineyards. They show a kind of symbiosis of church with vineyard and witness the connection of the human spirit and faith with this generous plant which has raised generations of islanders as well as the inhabitants of the whole Dalmatia. Every participant will be given this special holy wine, "vinum de vitae" will as a present from the vineyard near the church.

During the Hvar holy vineyard tour you will learn a lot about vineyards and wines, about the connection between the Church and the wine; you will also enjoy beautiful sceneries and, of course, you will enjoy a dalmatian lunch and local wines tasting in a relaxed atmosphere- without a strict evaluation of a sommelier.
There are more entertaining stories to hear from our guides, one of them is the story of the connection betweeen Croatian grape variety Plavac mali and Americain most famous variety Zinfandel. Until recently it was the only American grape variety whose origin was not known. Today we know that Zinfandel wine is produced of grape variety which originally came from Dalmatia so there is a popular saying that "The father went to America and the son remained in his native Dalmatia". Regardless of grape variety, on the island of Hvar a man has been sweating over his holy vineyard, a place where the sun joins the sea and the red soil.
